Select Iodine Supplements or iodized salt? - Mineral Tip
Is the use of iodized salt enough to supply the body with iodine it needs?

Should we take iodine supplements?

Although the techniques incorporate iodine in salt is considered successful to meet the body's need for iodine, the experts do not agree on the amount of iodine needed to maintain optimal health.

Minimum daily dose of 150 mcg of iodine per day is considered sufficient to prevent goiter and cretinism.

But that number may not be sufficient to maximize the production of thyroid hormones or to protect against other diseases related to iodine deficiency.

Iodized salt

One teaspoon of iodized salt contains the following components:

• 2,300 mg sodium

• 2,700 mg chloride

• iodide 300 mcg (0.3 mg)

dose Iodine

Generally, there is consensus on the dose range of vitamins and minerals needed by the body.

But specifically iodine, there is a difference of opinion of the experts regarding the safe and effective dose.

Conservative opinion stating that all the nutrients your body needs can be found in food.

This theory may be true 60 years ago, but as the carrying capacity of the land of diminishing returns, minerals and nutrients in the food will also be reduced.

In contrast, another opinion states a person must consume up to 50 mg of iodine per day or 300 times the usual recommended dose (150 mcg).

attention

High doses of iodine may be useful initially, but long-term use is not without risk.

High doses of iodine in the long term can lead to inflammation of the thyroid and can increase the risk of health condition called Hashimoto.

Between the two extreme sides of this, several studies recommend the iodine dose between 3 mg to 6 mg per day as safe.

This dose is considered a mid-dose that is considered to be sufficient for the body's iodine, but stay safe.

Iodine supplements

If iodine requirement can not be met from the diet, then you may need iodine supplements.

Recommended to choose supplements that contain iodine and iodide as well. Both of these substances are essential for maintaining health as well as useful to synthesize the hormone thyroxine.
