6 Tips on Taking Antihistamine Drugs During Pregnancy
Experiencing pain during pregnancy can be a very uncomfortable situation.

Moreover, pregnant women are advised not to take the drug during pregnancy to avoid possible adverse effects on the fetus.

However, if you suffer from allergies during pregnancy, not to worry, because the anti-allergy medications like antihistamines are relatively safe to use with the correct origin.

Here are tips using antihistamines during pregnancy:

1. Consult a physician

Consult with your doctor before taking antihistamines, vitamin supplements, or herbal medications while pregnant.

Your doctor will determine whether medications are safe to use during pregnancy. All medications taken should have minimal effects for both mother and fetus.

2. Avoid drugs in the first trimester

Try to avoid using any type of drugs, including antihistamines, during the first trimester of pregnancy.

This is the stage where the baby's major organs are developing. Doctors generally allow pregnant women taking the drug at a late stage of pregnancy but not during the first 13 weeks of pregnancy.

3. Select the second generation antihistamines

Second-generation antihistamines containing loratadine, cetirizine and fexophenodine, which has less effect than the previous-generation antihistamines.

4. Drinking more water

Increase your water intake when taking antihistamines during pregnancy.

Common side effect of antihistamines is dry mouth. Drink more water to avoid dehydration which can harm the mother and fetus.

5. Use antihistamines at the recommended dosage

Diphenhydramine, first-generation antihistamines, such as the hormone oxytocin has an effect when used in high doses.

Oxytocin can induce labor, thus causing premature birth.

6. Wary of side effects

Contact your doctor immediately if you notice any change in the frequency of occurrence of fetal movement or contractions increased when taking antihistamines or other drugs during pregnancy.
